Hey, stranger.
By the time this comes out, it’ll be 2 days until Halloween and I will be on a train back to Seattle. Currently, though, I’m sitting on my 25$ couch watching White Collar and applying to jobs. A classic Tuesday for me these days.
I, along with M, will be taking the Amtrak to Portland for a long weekend this Friday and I couldn’t be more excited. Trains are without a doubt the most superior form of transportation, and as someone with a PhD in daydreaming, I can think of nothing more exciting. I love, love, love the drink and snack carts, the 4-seat cubicle thing with the table, watching the Pacific Northwest scenery in the window, you get the picture. Which reminds me, back in 2019 I was in Scotland for 18 days and rode the Harry Potter train. During the journey I helped myself to piping hot English Breakfast tea, a vanilla scone with heaps of strawberry jam and cream, and considered myself to be the happiest girl in the world. I think of that memory often.
Speaking of scones, I thought I’d give an update on the state of my baking journey. This week: chocolate chip cookies. The pinnacle of easy recipes, and one that I have been known to fail many, many times. Notably: one time I made CCC with my dear friend Sadie and they turned to liquid in the oven and melted down through the racks. I hadn’t dared make them since. My brave attempt resulted in a pretty successful batch of cookies, however. I did indeed forget to buy baking powder and had to use pink Himalayan salt instead of sea salt (so funny) which is very on brand for me, but they were edible! So edible that I had like 3, hehe. Anyway, success on the baking front and we will see what I choose to undertake next.
Enough of that. Let’s talk about what I’ve been wearing recently. The Seattle weather has reached Artic temperatures, 45° Fahrenheit, and I am furious I can’t wear dresses anymore until I purchase a good pair of tights (more on that later). With the frozen temperatures comes the strange symbiosis between the excitement of cracking open your winter clothes you haven’t worn in a year and the complete loss of motivation to wear something other than sweats. It has been a bit of a struggle for me this week, and I haven’t exactly been proud of the outfits I’ve put together. So without further ado, here are some notable attempts at winter dressing from this week:
01. My beautiful, stunning, precious boots have made many appearances recently and I couldn’t be happier about it. I wore them to coffee in East Seattle, the bars in Capitol Hill, and shopping in University Village so needless to say, they’ve proven to be comfortable. And imagine a cute pair of black patterned tights with them! I need!
02. Return of the Puffer season is upon us, and I’m not a fan. I do love a good puff but my trusty Nike one is beyond boring to me these days. I don’t particularly love the way the fabric lays over the down filling, and mine is just slightly cropped so I’m on the market for a new one. A puffer is quintessential if you live north of California and I have yet to find the perfect one.
03. I finally purchased a blazer. Finally! I’ve been on the hunt for one that fits oversized but not too big, and I found this gorgeous pinstriped Levi’s blazer at my favorite vintage store in Capitol Hill, Slow Dance. I’ve been wearing the hell out of it and feeling very Copenhagen / NYC influencer. (Side bar: imagine this with my boots and a mini skirt. I am frothing at the mouth to try this combo at the appropriate event)
Finally, I want to unveil my Autumn/Winter 2023 bucket-list, which is an idea courtesy of my friend, R. She told me it could be fun to make a list of all the things I want to do or try during the winter, and update it every week. So here it goes (and feel free to add suggestions):
Take the ferry to Orcas island while the leaves are still orange
Friendsgiving
Throw a Holiday / Christmas party
Find a good wine bar for girls night
Attend at least 2 UW football games
Apple picking
Go skiing
Watch the lighting of the Christmas tree in Seattle
Modernism week in Palm Springs
Get a job :)
To cook:
Beef stew
Chicken pot pie
Mashed potatoes of some variety
Apple crumble (or pie)
I’m not the best at bucket lists, mostly because I forget about them, but maybe I’ll be successful this time around.
That’s all for now! Hope you are all staying warm and eating lots of yummy food. See you next week!
xoxo, ev
