NYC is the Capital G Greatest. It is so far out in its own league on urbanism compared to anywhere else in the US it's not even comparable. My time in NYC was pretty heavily marred by COVID though (and by being a broke grad student). I only came to love it right before I graduated and left, but now I try to get back for a visit every year and my love for it endures. With different timing, I might have stayed.
When I first moved to San Francisco, it did not live up to the intensity and urban conveniences of New York. Now that I've settled into San Francisco though, I find it's more my speed. When I go back to New York now, I feel like it's a little much—noise, crowdedness, cost of living... It's the Greatest, and that comes with some downsides. Brooklyn might be more my speed than Manhattan, but I only ever lived in Manhattan.
If I had to leave SF, NYC would be one of only a few other cities on my list.
I know exactly what you mean. Better yet: you know exactly what I mean. I found myself in the same place, saying out loud what I was always afraid of saying and wanting, but it became bigger than myself.
Really, being so happy for you made me realize that I am also so happy for me!!
